THE COMPROMISING CHRISTIAN

Charles Thorell

May 16, 2004

Many people accept Jesus as their Savior but they refuse to make Him Lord and Master too! Instead of focusing on God, His laws, and pursuing a close walk they become busy making money, buying things, going to parties, listening to secular music, watching television and going to the movies. Their prayer life is non-existent, they never read the Bible, and the only time they touch the Bible is when they go to church once a week. They don’t want Church to last any longer than an hour because it would interfere with their plans for the rest of the day. Pleasure and recreation are the real focus. Romans 8:1-8

We take a chance every time we compromise because we don’t know if we will receive a second chance to make it right even if we repent.

  • Adam and Eve compromised by eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Because of their actions we are all born in a state of separation from God. Genesis 3:1-6
  • Lot compromised when he parted with Abraham and went to Sodom. Genesis 13:7-13
  • Abraham and Sarah compromised by taking matters into their own hands and helped create the strife that exists in the Middle East today. Genesis 16:1-4
  • Esau compromised his birthright. Genesis 25:31-34; 27:30-38 With that he lost the right to:
    • Being lord over his brethren.
    • Offering sacrifice and conducting worship as head of the family.
    • A double portion of all his father’s possessions.
    • The right of conveying special blessings and privileges when dying.
    • Being in the bloodline of Jesus.
  • Jacob compromised his integrity and doing so he got the birthright and the blessing but it cost him dearly. His life was full of aggravation, disappointments, and disasters.
  • The Israelites compromised many times after coming out of Egypt that it cost them their lives. Numbers 14:26-34, Hebrews 3:15-19
  • Moses was faithful man of God. He compromised once and in doing so lost his chance to enter into the Promised Land. Numbers 20:1-12, Deuteronomy 34:1-5
  • Samson compromised with Delilah. Judges 16:1, 4
  • David compromised by:
    • Committing adultery with Bathsheba. II Samuel 11:1-5
    • Conducting a census against God’s will. II Samuel 24
    • He was called a man after God’s own heart because he repented after sinning. Acts 13:22-23
    • In Psalm 51 we see what made David different.
  • Solomon compromised by loving women who turned his heart away from God. I Kings 11:1-4
  • Ananias and Sapphira compromised just once and it cost them their lives. Acts 5:1-10
  • Peter was known for being bold and making many mistakes but he repented whenever he compromised.
    • He denied Jesus. Matthew 26:33-35, 75
    • Afterwards God sent for Peter. Mark 16:1-7

What you sow is what you reap? Galatians 6:7-9 Many times we do not look into the future as to the significance of our actions and how they will affect us. We like to talk about the love of God, but He is also a God of judgment and we will be held accountable. When we compromise, we don’t know if we’ll receive a second chance even if we repent. Hebrews 12:1-17

Will we be able to say when we’ve finished our time here on earth that we did not compromise? And if we did, did we repent? What will our testimony be to those around us?
