The Deliberate Dumbing Down of
America reveals changes that were gradually brought into the American public
education system work to eliminate the influences of a child’s parents
(religion, morals, national patriotism), and mold the child into a member of the
proletariat in preparation for a socialist-collectivist world of the future.
If you think there’s nothing wrong with
America’s educational system, you will probably dismiss this book as the
rantings of a right-wing conspiracy theorist who sees danger at every turn. If
you’re a back-to-basics reformer, you won’t like it either, because Iserbyt
finds fault with virtually every program being used in America’s schools. That
includes character education, core curriculum, and Direct Instruction, all
supported by conservatives as ways to bring morality and rigor back into the
classroom.
Charlotte Iserbyt presents a clear
chronology of educational restructuring and brings compelling evidence that
school reform, supported by all political stripes, to be a totalitarian plan
using Skinnerian behavior modification and other equally manipulative
psychological techniques to subjugate future generations in a state of ignorant
bliss.
This is a straight shooting book that
tells the whole truth and should be mandatory reading for elected officials, who
should give serious consideration to her proposals in order to turn the
situation around. If you have already made the decision to home school, this
book will reinforce the idea that you have made the correct decision for your
children. It can also be a psychological lifeboat for teachers who feel trapped
in the educational system.
Since the original publication, some
readers have requested a smaller version. This revised and abridged version is
the response to those many requests. The afterword, glossary, resources,
appendices and index have all been removed from the 2011 version. Of utmost
importance is the addition of “Update” which covers the final, but long-planned,
institutionalization, since publication of the original book in 1999, of three
activities, relatively new to the reader: (1) the use of unconstitutional
tax-supported (public/private partnership) charter schools run by unelected
boards. These schools use non-graded Skinnerian computer instruction to train
for the planned economy (school to work); (2) global values-changing education,
including International Baccalaureate programs and (3) restructuring of our
nation’s representative governmental structure, using regionalism (socialism)
with its unelected councils (soviets), and communitarianism.
Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt served as the
Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI),
U.S. Department of Education, during the first term of U.S. President Ronald
Reagan and was an employee of the U.S. Department of State. She blew the whistle
in the 1980’s on government activities withheld from the public. Iserbyt was
relieved of her duties in 1982 after leaking an important technology grant for
computerized learning (Project BEST: Better Education Skills through Technology)
